so we looked at uh last week kind of the outline of where we're headed and and uh kind of ran out of time as we began to look at these but um I call these the
1:06
four subdivisions of the spirit's work but um I'm using a phrase quotation marks to me mean somebody said it
1:16
um among men or amid men one of the authors wrote uh looking specifically at how the Holy Spirit used men uh um
1:31
and there are essentially four phrases or four combinations of the Hebrew terms and I'm going to try my best to
1:41
um I won't I don't read the Hebrew I'm not sure how to pronounce all these things but I've looked up the kind of the transliteration of them and uh so
1:53
I'll give you some of those words but um we'll look at some of the examples that are kind of the classic ones that I
2:04
can see in each of the books that I look at these are the ones that they point to that kind of are the clearest examples of where this phrase is used and what it
2:17
means and there is Nuance of meaning obviously in uh in translations at this you know at this distance from those
2:28
times but um there is a difference for example that we'll see between when the writer writes that he the Holy
2:40
Spirit came upon for example Gideon and Gideon and um the uh passage I don't know if you you noticed it um in judges 14 that
2:53
Aaron read he said for some reason you know I wasn't here that week and we've moved judges 14 now well judges 14 we read about Samson where the spirit Came
3:04
Upon him mightily and there's a difference in the Hebrew between he the spirit Came Upon Gideon and the spirit Came Upon Samson mightily and yeah I
3:17
there is overlap there but I appreciated what some of the authors said to kind of help us flesh out what it what is is that difference so I thought that was uh
3:29
pretty neat that we had just begun talking about uh the Holy Spirit coming upon men and he read that um passage in judges 14 as hard as it is to kind of
3:40
grasp um Samson and that I I hopefully we'll be able to see a little clearer what that what that meant in in that
3:51
passage for uh Samson so uh the first of
4:10
upon men the the Hebrew that is um used in the three passages that we'll look at here is
4:22
um and I don't remember this from my Hebrew class it's transliterated as law by but it but it is uh ruach the spirit ruach Yahweh
4:39
labash at Gideon the spirit of Jehovah Came Upon um Gideon so we're going to look at
4:52
Judges chapter 6 I read it last week so I won't read the whole section again um because it's in the midst of a
5:03
larger um section you have to kind of see why what this was all about and I'll try to kind of re reiterate that somewhat but judges 6 um 34 is the specific
5:17
verse um from here but the um
5:35
Gideon has gone and he's ripped down torn down all the altars to bail and people are upset the men of the city go to his father and say bring him out so we can kill him and he says will
5:51
you contend for bail or will you deliver him and they named renamed Gideon jerob Vale which means let Baal contend
6:01
against him and all the midianites came and assembled um and crossed over and camped in the valley of jezrael it says and
6:14
then verse 34 so the spirit of the Lord Came Upon Gideon and he blew the trumpet and the abizer ites were called together to follow him and he sends Messengers
6:27
and God is saying um that you're going to deliver Israel and then of course he
6:37
does the fleece overnight and all of those things those things but this idea of coming upon was for a specific purpose he was um the the idea
6:51
of this lobash is um a wrapping a wrapping around or putting on a garment um or
7:02
um or clothing oneself and the idea that I can understand is that it's the idea of they
7:13
[Music] were it's not an anointing but they're they're being made instruments to accomplish the work and
7:23
so the men um the men were not clothed with the Holy Spirit but the Holy Spirit clothed
7:35
himself in himself in men so just kind of try to wrap your your mind around that it it can be figurative can be taken literally in
7:48
Hebrew itself but here I think we see this um that really happened the spirit Came
7:58
Upon him clothed descended upon Gideon laid himself around him some say like like a coat of mail so some say
8:12
it's not being clothed with but clothed in um this is where again there's some disagreement but it's the idea that he
8:24
has now a strong equipment to do what he's supposed to do it's as if if he's been given an invulnerability um an
8:37
invincibility to do what he's supposed to do and I think we see in Gideon in several times
8:52
this I I think there's a background fear and then of course God is telling you've got too many people you got to cut it down and what is a what is a a leader or so you know Commander want to do he wants to have more and so I I think
9:05
there's this assurance to Gideon that I am giving you this equipment I am giving you this uh invincibility to do
9:18
what you're supposed to do so the word most uh translations will will say
9:29
they either Came Upon or clothed Gideon yes
9:40
inter even though he was the Holy Spirit came upon him he still had his
9:54
to it's not like he just all of a sudden became a became a superhero he was still still getting right I find that very instructive yeah
10:06
instructive yeah um and then um let me just read this this is from uh CF Kyle of the infamous Kyle and delit um and I still don't know how to
10:17
spell dich I had to type every single letter and triple check it but in his introduction to
10:27
introduction to judges he I'm going to read this paragraph that kind of to me helps summarize these four subdivisions of this amid men what he's
10:40
doing he specifically is tying it to Gideon when he writes it so I don't want to take it totally out of context but I
10:50
think if you listen to what he says and I'll I'm going to read a a sentence from um G Campbell Morgan at the end where he
11:00
kind of summarizes what he thinks of this these four subdivisions of mid men but this one helps me because he kind of
11:10
says this is this is what the Lord is doing when you read through judges P specifically this section of about Gideon he says
11:21
this I'm quoting the more heavily the Lord punished his rebellious Nation the more gloriously did he set forth his
11:31
near nearness to help and also the way which would lead to a lasting peace and to True Deliverance out of every trouble
11:42
see this is not just God going in and saying poof everything's good the the purpose is to show God is near and God is
11:54
designing and using men to bring about his glory his glory to bring about peace to bring about Deliverance um out of every trouble and
12:06
specifically here taking Gideon and by clothing him with the Holy Spirit moving him to gather the people gather his wits
12:18
about him and figure out how to um defeat the enemies so he already um and this is another thing
12:30
that we'll see as we look at these [Music] um God does not
12:43
ignore again as as I can see it here he does not ignore the gifting and the strengths that men have um and yet um he brings them further
13:00
um and uses those intertwin with the strength of the of the spirit um don't need to turn here but the the other two I'll let me write these
13:12
down if you want to go back and
13:50
in uh 1 Chronicles um it was a name I I did not remember but remember but it's amsi it's amsi some of you who pronounce these things
14:01
better than I do um but beginning in verse 16 the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold of David and David went out
14:12
to meet them so this is when he's um in ziklag and he's escaping from Saul and he's trying to figure out who's with me and who's not with me and the sons of
14:24
Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David and David went out to meet them and answered and said to them if you come peacefully to me to help me my heart shall be United with you but if to betray me to my adversary
14:37
since there is no wrong in my hands May the god of our fathers look on it and decide then the spirit Came Upon amsi who was the chief of the 30 and he said
14:50
we are yours oh David and with you oh son of Jesse peace peace to you and peace to him who helps you indeed your God God helps you then David received
15:01
them and made them captains of the band there were 30 men and there apparently there are those
15:12
who say you know why didn't the Bible list all of these 30 men but it's as if God is trying to show
15:22
us I I can take individuals and I can I can raise them up for my purposes that that I can clothe a man that
15:33
otherwise we wouldn't know about um he was singled out as the chief of these 30 and yet he said the spirit clothed him
15:43
the spirit Came Upon him um in 2 Chronicles 24 um again we we we just see instances
15:57
where the spirit is is using these men um for God's purpose [Music] um this is
16:15
uh Zechariah I'm trying to decide where to start now I'll just read the I'll read the passage but after the death of jeho the officials of Judah came and bowed down to the king and the King listened
16:25
to them and they abandoned the house of the Lord the the god of their fathers and served the asham and the idols so wrath Came Upon Judah and Jerusalem for
16:35
this their guilt yet he sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord though they were they testified against them they would not listen then the
16:46
spirit of God came on Zachariah the son of jeho the priest and he stood above the people and said to them thus God has said why do you transgress the
16:57
Commandments of the Lord and do not Prosper because you have forsaken the Lord he has also forsaken you so they conspired against them and at the C command of the king they stoned him to
17:08
death in the court of the house of the Lord thus joash the king did not remember the kindness which his father jeho had shown him but murdered his son
17:20
and as he died he said may the Lord see here um to me when I read that it's like well
17:31
the spirit Came Upon him but then he was stoned to death but he did stand and pronounce thus God
17:43
has said um in the midst of these people probably knowing full well what was about to come he had seen the buildup of all of these things what was happening
17:54
and what they were actually doing and God had clothed him with that power to make that pronouncement and obviously they would be judged um for
18:08
that this is the coming upon or being
18:19
closed next we'll we'll look at judges 14 um this is slightly different
18:51
and specifically we'll be looking at uh verses five and
19:10
last Sunday um Samson went down to timna with his father and mother and came as far as The Vineyards of timna and behold a young lion came roaring toward him and
19:20
the spirit of the Lord came upon Him mightily so that he tore him as one tears a kid though he had nothing in his hand hand but he did not tell his father
19:31
and mother what he had done um the words here
19:42
[Music] are so the transliteration of the Hebrew is something along the lines of salak uh let me find it again
19:55
salak AL ruach yah way that the idea is to push
20:06
forward or above or over or against that it
20:25
has more of of this kind of forceful idea one of the commentators and I don't have it annotated here uh which one but um he used the word um that it this the
20:38
idea of pushing forward equals attacked he attacked men with compulsion forced them forward to do a certain activity that's different from
20:51
this even though our English kind of comes well they come upon but this mightily has that force that
21:03
attacking um idea here and we see it of course with uh with Samson um just
21:15
graphically uh and I appreciated what Chuck said on Thursday night uh we we go back to our Sunday school days when we we visualized Samson and you what did he
21:27
used the you know picture of Arnold schwortz Ander um with the eight pack abs and you know big pistols for biceps and all that
21:39
stuff but he was probably a skinny Winnie um Winnie um probably I don't know like me I don't know um I blew both of my biceps out so
21:51
I have no biceps um but God in the Holy Spirit came upon on him mightily he pushed him forward he
22:02
he attacked him um this is what CF Kyle says about this this uh episode this act is described as
22:12
the operation of the spirit of Jehovah which Came Upon um sorry I've misquoted it um that's for Samuel sorry I've got it out of order um we'll read that one
22:24
next in uh in Samuel but this idea of pushing forward this idea of attacking um by the Holy Spirit um so the other other ones that go with this
22:36
are um 1 Samuel 10 Again these are kind of the classic um passages to illustrate
22:56
this so let's read the Samuel and then I'll go back to seef Kyle
23:33
yeah trying to again figure out where to start reading here
23:54
um sorry again these are larger peric P that this comes out of um starting at verse 5 of chapter 10 afterward you will
24:06
come to the hill of God where the Philistine Garrison is and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place
24:16
with harp tambourine flute and liar before them and they will be prophesying then the spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily and you shall prophesy
24:26
with them and be ch changed into another man and it shall be when these signs come to you do for yourself what the occasion requires for God is with you and you
24:38
shall go down before me to gilgal and behold I will come down to you to offer burn offerings and sacrifice peace offerings and you will wait seven days
24:48
until I come to you and you and show you what you should do then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel God Chang his heart and all those signs came about on that day when they came to the
25:01
hill there Behold a group of prophets met him and the spirit of God Came Upon him mightily so he that he prophesied among them
25:12
among them um this is Saul and what he God says in verse 6 uh I guess to me kind of the English
25:27
translation of of what has happened here God attacking him god pushing him forward he was changed into another
25:39
man um he and there I didn't read it but on verse 11 they they looked at him let me yeah hold on just a second and it came
25:49
about when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets that the people said to one another what has happened to the son of is is Saul also among the prophet he had
26:02
changed they didn't recognize him in this new role they knew who he was but they didn't know what had happened
26:13
um with this change that was brought about by the spirit of God coming upon him to me that again is an illustration that that we can see I think for our
26:24
benefit that it wasn't something that Saul thought thought of doing it was what God had done by pushing him
26:42
a yeah yeah there yeah there's a power here there's a there's a a force here
27:15
um I have forgotten the the the total context here um the three there were men going up to God at
27:26
God at bethl um
27:38
I would say that these are true worshippers but in in this situation here but uh I would have to go back and
27:49
look um in the larger context here
28:51
yeah um I would say so but again um would have to look at it a little more closely before I answer I've kind of
29:08
16 um this is the choosing of God choosing of of David the son of Jesse and he says Samuel said to Jesse are these all the children and he said there remains yet the youngest and behold he
29:20
is tending the Sheep then Samuel said to Jesse send and bring him for we will not sit down until he comes here here so he sent and brought him in now he was ready
29:32
with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance and the Lord said arise anoint him for this is he then Samuel took the horn and anointed him in the midst of his brothers and the spirit of
29:43
the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward and Samuel arose and went to
29:59
um what I see here one of the questions that comes up is uh because after this David goes back to tending the sheep and apparently there are those who want to read into that and say so what
30:12
was the use of the spirit coming along upon David when he just went back to being a Shepherd but what we see here is he's again he's taking
30:24
David where he is like if you if I could bring it into the modern vernacular I guess and but he's going to use him for
30:34
greater purposes and prepare him for what's ahead David it's still David David had his Grievous
30:45
his Grievous sins but the spirit Came Upon him to to act um to to do these things um there
30:56
are some who who want to argue and Samson is an enigma to me anyway um but uh this is the quote I was I was looking for from CF Kyle and I think I just um
31:10
have a have a misprint here but I'll read this it kind of helps me understand what we're reading about with uh Samson he says this act is described as
31:22
the operation of the spirit of Jehovah which Came Upon Samson because it showed the Phil listings the superior power of the Servants of Jehovah it was not carnal Revenge that
31:35
impelled Samson to the deed and the reason is his anger comes later in the episode and he's not angry
31:48
with the with the Philistines who does he get angry with Wifey he gets angry at his wife for what she has done how she has tricked
32:01
him so the purpose of God for coming upon Him mightily at this point was to to show the Philistines this is the power that that he generates by the
32:13
spirit so um and I I think we see that with um Samuel or Saul and we see it
32:23
with um with David as well that it it is that force that comes from the Holy Spirit
33:34
[Music] um Joseph has just told Pharaoh his his dream his famous uh dream and his Joseph's famous answer um about the what
33:46
was going to happen and then what should happen about them storing up the grain and doing all all those things and then verse 37 says now the proposal seemed
33:57
good to pharaoh and to all his servants then Pharaoh said to his servants can we find a man like this in whom is a Divine
34:08
spirit so Pharaoh said to Joseph since God has informed you of all of this there is no one so Discerning as W as wise as you are you shall be over my
34:20
house and according to your command all my people shall do homage only in the throne I will be greater than you you um the words here
34:33
[Music] are um is Asher ruach
34:58
things the idea here is that um Pharaoh wants to know and it's there's a little bit of Joseph's history that he knows but not much we know more because
35:11
we've read about his brothers and how he dealt with those things and the things that happened to him and the the cup Bearer and the chief breaker and all of
35:21
those things so we can kind of see um a little bit about Joseph that pharaoh didn't have the backstory
35:32
on but he's already amazed because he's looking around at his court and saying can we really find a man like this in whom is a Divine
35:46
Spirit he's Spirit he's saying how did this man come to have this kind of
36:02
Insight or understanding but it's it's more than just wisdom and insight this the these words um it it's more than just he was wise and understanding in
36:13
certain things there is um there's a moral component to it there's a I guess you could say a religious
36:24
component to to this um let's look at
36:37
numbers 27 about 27 about Joshua and then I'll read uh delicious quote
36:51
here that kind of again helps me kind of flush out flush out the the things that the comes from the Hebrew that I don't get without help um this is
37:05
Moses speaking to the Lord may the Lord the god of the spirits of All Flesh appoint a man over the congregation who will go out and come in
37:16
before them and will lead them out and bring them in that the congregation of the Lord may be like sheep who which may not be like sheep who have no
37:28
Shepherd so the Lord said to Moses take Joshua the son of nun a man in whom is the spirit and lay your hand on him and
37:38
have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation and commission him in their sight and you shall put some of your Authority on him
37:49
in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel May obey him this is is from
37:59
dich he said he who had the spirit this Divine Spirit um it's not just insight and
38:10
wisdom he says but the higher power inspired by God into the soul which quickens the moral and religious life
38:20
and determines its development in this case therefore it was the spiritual endowment requisite for the office he was called to
38:31
fill um this is It's hard to translate into a single phrase here but
38:53
this not just wisdom not just insight not just understanding but there's a spiritual endowment spiritual endowment to help them govern to uh help them do
39:05
uh what was called upon [Music] um one writer said it's it's not autocracy and it's not tyranny but it's it's a spiritual
39:17
discretion and wisdom and even in the component of of gentleness the the understanding of what to do and what to say and how to lead um much more
39:30
powerful than I mean there there are wise and understanding men who are ranked pagans this is this is a different component um
39:42
here I think
40:08
yeah I mean remember what we said last time that the holy spirit's work and these are the four it's it's partial and it's occasional and it's
40:19
special as well as prophetic so yes there is some dimness here and yet my purpose is to show that
40:29
the Holy Spirit was always operative always executing even from the beginning
40:40
um and many you know will put the spirit in the New Testament only but we we see him powerfully working and and again that's the other
40:51
thing you know it's work not just an influence or a force or a um some ethereal thing so does that help
41:03
that I mean it is it is them because he's not fully disclosed uh until the New Testament this work but in
41:25
Spirit yes inter
41:54
yeah yeah yeah it's it's coming yeah we see it partially and especially occasionally right now um let me see if I can finish um the
42:07
last one
42:21
men for specific tasks and um it's uh Exodus 31
42:32
the building of the Tabernacle now the Lord spoke to Moses saying see I have called by name bezel the son of Yuri the son of her of
42:43
the tribe of Judah I have filled him with the spirit of God in wisdom in understanding in knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship to make artistic designs for work in gold and silver and
42:55
in bronze and in The Cutting of stone for settings and in the carving of wood that he may work in all kinds of craftsmanship the um the words here are
43:08
mle ruach
43:25
Elohim and we trans translate that into uh to fil it's fil filling um delich writes filling with the spirit of God signifies the communication of an
43:35
extraordinary and Supernatural endowment and qualification in wisdom and all of these other things that consist of wisdom understanding knowledge every
43:45
kind of workmanship that is to say for the performance for every kind of work this and this is what I was saying before this did not Prelude either
43:57
natural capacity or acquired skill but rather presupposed them and if you look down if you were to read that in in verse six that I I didn't read There
44:10
bezalel was qualified to quote unquote think out inventions he he he was able to Think Through designs and have artistic ideas but it wasn't that
44:25
God took um some somebody who didn't have any of that but he works with that and um it just
44:36
again it doesn't I mean what was it designed to do um and I'll end with this um this quote from G
44:47
camel Morgan I think if you were to summarize at least to me this is a good summary sentence for all of these things that the spirit is doing amid men he
44:59
writes thus the things of God were made known amid men in the measure necessary and possible by that spirit of God who
45:11
within the mystery of deity is the consciousness of God and revealer of that deity to man it it shows the glory
45:22
of God of God in having a man men stand up against the idolators in having a man who was
45:32
singled out men singled out that were pushed forward to do Mighty things people endowed with power to
45:43
govern the people but people to do things what things what was the the thing about all of the details that bezel did all of the
45:54
carvings and all the settings of stone and wood and all of these things for the glory of God and to say God is near this is his house this is who we worship
46:13
pray Our Father we thank you for these things in the word we ask that you would give us a a spirit of understanding and wisdom but we also pray that you would fill us to
46:25
completeness that we might walk as children of the light we might walk in a manner that pleases you and glorifies you that we might walk in a way that
46:37
others will know that that you have changed us and you have caused us to be your children and we ask that you would do it not for our Glory but for to thy
46:50
name be all glory in Christ's name we pray amen
