if one uses it lawfully. Part two. Um it's been about a year since we finished up uh we finished up in uh chapter five uh of Deuteronomy having completed Moses the entirety of Moses' first speech uh
0:16
and having begun a part of the second um particularly with a discussion an extended discussion about the lawful use of the law uh for a people not under law
0:27
but under grace. uh and that discussion will definitely continue uh throughout this second discourse of Moses which is the main body of Deuteronomy.
0:38
Um Deuteronomy at its very very most simplistic is uh three points and a poem. U it it is a very much three
0:52
points and a poem. I thought you said three poets. No not three poets. three points in a poem. Um, it is a series of three speeches or
1:03
discourses that Moses spoke to the people of Israel while they were east of the Jordan in what was called the plains of Moab. Uh, and then it is those three speeches are followed by a section where
1:15
he encourages Joshua uh and gives last instructions. He teaches Israel a song and then blesses their tribes uh in much the same way that Jacob blessed his sons
1:28
when he was about to die. Moses blesses the tribes of Israel uh when he is about to die and speaks of their future history um uh encouraging them uh to
1:39
remain faithful. Um, so I've I've kind of composed uh uh what I hope is a helpful uh simple diagram of how you can think about Deuteronomy as we really
1:51
start to get into the meat of it. Um, so we've already done uh so first there's a an an introduction uh a brief narrative uh establishing the setting where they
2:03
are and where they've come from. Uh and then as as we studied last time, uh Moses begins by telling them how when they left the mountain or when they were
2:13
about to leave, uh he appointed their chiefs uh and they journeyed through the wilderness and came to the land and then their fathers um uh failed concerning
2:25
belief. They gave into their fears uh and they said of their children that they would become the prey of a people great and tall and being confirmed in
2:36
that unbelief they were condemned to fall uh in the wilderness and such was the fate of the old generation. Moses then goes on to take the new generation
2:49
back through their recent history through a guided tour of neighboring peoples that they passed by whose ancestors were relatives of their ancestors. U and tells them Yahweh gave
3:03
put put these people in possession of their land over against more powerful enemies. How much more will he put you in possession, having promised this land
3:13
to your fathers? These peoples did not know Yahweh, did not serve him. Uh, and yet the children of Israel were God's own people. How much more will he set them in their land? And then offers as
3:26
evidence a a recounting of the war that they had with the two kings of the Amorites who were east of the Jordan. And so that the words of their fathers,
3:37
our children will become prey of a people great and tall are turned on their heads where the children make prey of a people great and tall. And then he goes on to uh exhort them
3:57
to remain faithful to God. Uh as as God has brought them thus far alive and even pointing out to them that the people who are currently there listening to him are not just the new generation in Toto but
4:09
those who held fast to the word of God. um that he reminds them that some of your number were uh were killed by plague, having gone after idols. And yet
4:20
those of you who held fast to the word of Yahweh are here alive today and exhorts them to remain in remembrance of God having gathered them together to let
4:30
them hear his words, remain in remembrance of what he did to the Egyptians and remain in remembrance through their future history. uh because they too may be cut off for unbelief
4:41
even having been set in the land. But to ask of the days past, how is it possible that we as a small and insignificant people could have been brought thus far
4:52
through so many things if we were not shepherded and guided and loved by the living God. And thus he ends what is the the
5:02
introduction to uh to Deuteronomy. the there is then a a brief narrative about uh him setting up three cities of refuge uh east of the Jordan which is to say
5:14
that now they have a governing structure uh east of the Jordan. They are put in full possession of it. And then the main meat of Deuteronomy uh is our chapters 5
5:34
28. Okay. And and we we stopped right in the beginning. uh of that. Um this is where Moses recounts to them the speaking of the 10 words of the law at Mount Si or Horeb as he sometimes says
5:46
um to their fathers and yet tells them it was not with our fathers that Yahweh made this covenant but with us who are here alive today. Um so that the word
5:59
that was spoken is theirs as their possession. Um and we will uh today uh read what is uh an
6:10
introductory segment introductory segment um in chapters 5 through 11 in which he recounts to them the 10 words and then the the teaching that he
6:20
was supposed to give the people of Israel uh uh every one of it he was supposed to speak to them for God since they begged that no further word be
6:30
spoken audibly to them. Um, and then our chapters 12 through 26 are uh a expounding in more detail uh on on the
6:44
law and instructions as to how that law will apply in their future possession when they are set in the land. And then there's a conclusion um chapters 27 through 28 approximately
6:56
um in which they set he he instructs them as to setting the blessing and the curse on the mounts Gazim and Ebal. And I've been impressed in doing study in
7:08
this middle part how someone could have made the uh uh silly decision uh of calling this in the Greek uh second law. They really should have called it a tale
7:18
of two mountains. Uh because as I as I illustrated last time, you have Moses having gone up the same mountain twice and then the trajectory of his
7:30
instructions is they will go up two mountains one time. And whereas whereas God spoke to him and he spoke the law to the people on these
7:43
mountains, they will speak the law on these two these two mountains once they enter into into the land. Say a little bit of a furrowed brow. Do you have a question? Okay.
8:00
Okay. Um so I I offered that last time as kind of an illustration of h how the how their history is as as simply as possible. Anyways um the at the the so then there's a third speech
8:13
which is roughly uh 29 to 30. Um and then finally an appendix of as I said exhortations to Joshua uh a song uh and
8:25
an oracle concerning their future history. And finally, uh, a narrative concerning a brief narrative and eulogy concerning Moses' death. Um, so this is
8:35
34 and this would be 31 through 33. Okay. So, uh, that's the that's the simple version. Um, but you can see that
8:49
it will it will unfold to us in some very intricate ways and really are really already has. Um so I hope that's helpful. Um really without much ado
9:03
further I I want to go to uh our reading of chapters 5 through 11. At my first uh session in part one I read the first discourse. Um obviously this is not
9:15
possible within the hour that we have. Um so but there are some natural breaks that break it up uh just like the rest of Deuteronomy is in general. Um so uh
9:29
this will be sufficient but I want you to be able to hear hopefully the benefit of all the study I've done in this will result in a clear reading um that will
9:40
help you gain insight into uh this law that Moses spoke. Um so we're going to do that today. Um I want to give pride of place to to the word and then I have
9:51
if if time permits I have some uh concluding thoughts uh for our general ed edification. Um so um please feel free during this if you need to get up
10:03
if you need to move that is fine. Please don't feel like you have to um uh be in one spot during this because I recognize that it's long. I'm more interested in clear hearing than anything.
10:24
And as as Moses might say um let us hear as the people of God and these words which I read you will be on your heart. This is starting at uh chapters
10:36
uh chapter 4 verse 44. This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel. These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the
10:47
rules which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Bor and the land of Cion, the king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon, whom
10:59
Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. And they took possession of his land and of the land of Og, the king of Bashon, the two kings of the Amorites who lived to the
11:11
east beyond the Jordan, from Araware, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sriion, that is Hermmon, together with all the Arabah
11:21
on the east side of the Jordan, as far as the sea of the Arabah under the slopes of slopes of Pijk. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "Hear, O Israel, the
11:33
statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them." Yahweh our God made a covenant with us in
11:43
Horeb. Not with our fathers did Yahweh make this covenant, but with us who are all of us here alive today. Yahweh spoke with you face to face at the mountain
11:55
out of the midst of the fire while I stood between Yahweh and you at that time to declare to you the word of Yahweh. For you were afraid because of the fire and you did not go up into the
12:06
mountain. He said, "I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods in my presence.
12:19
You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in the heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down
12:30
to them nor serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast
12:42
love to thousands of those who love me and keep my words. You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh will not hold him
12:53
guiltless who misuses his name. Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your
13:05
work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. On it you shall not do any work. you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or female
13:15
servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the sojourer who is within your gates that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well
13:26
as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.
13:36
Therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Honor your father and mother as Yahweh your God commanded you, that your days may be long and that it may go well with
13:48
you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you. And you shall not murder, and you shall not commit adultery, and you shall not steal, and you shall not
14:00
bear false witness against your neighbor. And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female
14:12
servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbors. These words Yahweh spoke to all your assembly at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the
14:24
thick darkness with a loud voice. And he added, "No more." He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. And as soon as you heard the voice out
14:34
of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders, and you said, "Behold, Yahweh our God has shown us his glory
14:46
and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. Now therefore, why
14:57
should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of Yahweh our God anymore, we shall die. For who is there of all flesh that has
15:08
heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire as we have and has still lived? You go near and hear all that Yahweh our God will
15:18
say, and speak to us all that Yahweh our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it. And Yahweh heard your words when you spoke to me. And Yahweh said to me, I
15:31
have heard the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh, that they had such a mind as this always to fear me and keep all my commandments
15:43
that it might go well with them and with their sons forever. Go and say to them, "Return to your tents." But you stand here by me and I will tell you the whole
15:55
commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess. You then shall be careful to do
16:06
as Yahweh your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or the left. You shall walk in all the way that Yahweh your God has commanded you, that you may live, and
16:16
that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. Now, this is the commandment, the statutes, and the rules that Yahweh your God commanded me to
16:28
teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over to possess it, that you may fear Yahweh your God, you and your son, and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes
16:40
and commandments, which I command you all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you
16:52
may multiply greatly, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey. Here, O Israel, Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one.
17:05
You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them
17:17
diligently to your children. And you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your
17:28
hand. And they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. And when Yahweh brings you
17:38
into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you with great and good cities that you did not build, and houses full of all good things that you
17:49
did not fill, and sistns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant. And when you eat and are full, then take care lest you
17:59
forget Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. It is Yahweh your God you shall fear him you shall serve and by his name
18:10
you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you. For Yahweh your God in your midst is a jealous God, lest the
18:21
anger of Yahweh your God be kindled against you and he destroy you from off the face of the ground. You shall not put Yahweh your God to the test as you tested him at
18:32
Masaha. keeping them, you shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he commanded you. And you shall do what is
18:42
right and good in the sight of Yahweh, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of that good land that Yahweh swore to give to your fathers, by thrusting out all
18:53
your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has promised. And when your son asks you in time to come, what is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the
19:04
rules that Yahweh our God has commanded you? Then you shall say to your son, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt." And Yahweh brought us out of Egypt with a
19:15
mighty hand. And Yahweh showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt, and against Pharaoh and all his household before our eyes. and he
19:26
brought us out from there that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. And Yahweh commanded us to do all these statutes to
19:38
fear Yahweh our good, excuse me, our God for our good always, that he might preserve us alive as we are this day. And it will be righteousness for us if
19:49
we are careful to do all this commandment before Yahweh our God as he has commanded us. When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take
20:00
possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Gegosites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the
20:11
Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than yourselves. And when Yahweh your God gives them over to you and you defeat them, destroying you must
20:22
destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. You shall not intermar with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking
20:33
their daughters for your sons. For they would turn away your sons from following me to serve other gods. Then the anger of Yahweh would be kindled against you,
20:43
and he would destroy you quickly. But thus shall you deal with them. You shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and chop down
20:54
their asharim, and burn their carved images with fire. For you are a people holy to Yahweh your God. For Yahweh your
21:04
God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession. out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that
21:15
Yahweh set his love on you and chose you. For you were the fewest of all peoples. But it is because Yahweh loves you and is keeping the oath he swore to your fathers that Yahweh has brought you
21:27
out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Know therefore that Yahweh your God is God.
21:38
the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations and repays to their face those that hate him by destroying them.
21:50
He will not be slack with the one who hates him. He will repay him to the face. You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today. And
22:03
because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, Yahweh your God will keep with you the covenant and steadfast love he swore to your fathers. He will love you, bless you, and multiply you.
22:16
He will bless the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your ground, your grain, and your wine, and your oil, and the increase of your herds, and the young of your flock in the land that he swore your fathers to give you. You
22:28
shall be blessed above all peoples. There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. And Yahweh will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases
22:40
of Egypt which you knew will he inflict on you. But he will lay them on all who hate you. And you shall consume all the peoples that Yahweh your God will give
22:51
over to you. Your eyes shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you. If you say in your heart, "These nations
23:02
are more numerous than I, how can I dispossess them?" You shall not be afraid of them. But remembering, you shall remember what Yahweh your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt, the great
23:15
trials that your eyes saw, the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm by which Yahweh your God brought you out. So will Yahweh your God do to all the peoples of whom you
23:27
are afraid. Moreover, Yahweh your God will send hornets among them until those who are left and hide themselves from you are themselves destroyed. You shall
23:37
not be in dread of them, for Yahweh your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God. Yahweh your God will clear away these nations before you little by
23:48
little. You may not make an end of them at once, lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you, but Yahweh your God will give them over to you and throw
23:58
them into great confusion until they are destroyed. And he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under heaven. No one
24:08
shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. The carved images of their gods you shall burn with fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it
24:20
for yourselves, lest you be ins snared by it, for it is an abomination to Yahweh your God. And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house, and
24:31
become devoted to destruction like it. Detesting you shall detest it, and abhoring you shall abhore it, for it is devoted to destruction.
24:43
The whole commandment that I command you today, you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply and go in and possess the land that Yahweh swore to
24:54
give to your fathers. And you shall remember the whole way that Yahweh your God has led you these 40 years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your
25:05
heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with mana, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know that he might make you
25:18
know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh. Your clothing did not wear out on you, and
25:28
your foot did not swell these 40 years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, Yahweh your God disciplines you, so shall you keep the
25:39
commandments of Yahweh your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. For Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water,
25:51
of fountains and springs flowing out in the valleys and hills. A land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and
26:02
honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing. A land whose stones are iron and and out of whose hills you
26:12
may dig copper. and you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless Yahweh your God for the good land that he has given you. Take care lest you forget Yahweh
26:23
your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes which I command you today. Lest when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, and when your
26:35
herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget Yahweh your God, who brought you out of
26:46
the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through that great and terrifying wilderness with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who
26:57
brought you water out of the flinty who fed you in the wilderness with mana your fathers did not know that he might humble you and test you to do you good in the end. Beware lest you say in your
27:10
heart, "My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth." You shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you the
27:21
power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant, that he swore to your fathers as it is this day. And if forgetting you forget Yahweh your God
27:32
and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that perishing you shall perish. Like the nations that Yahweh makes to
27:43
perish before you, so shall you perish because you would not obey the voice of Yahweh your God. Here, O Israel, you are to cross over Jordan today, to go into
27:55
dispossessed nations greater and mightier than yourselves. Cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall,
28:07
the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and whom you have heard it said, who can stand before the sons of Anch. Know therefore today that he who goes over
28:17
before you as a consuming fire is Yahweh your God. He will destroy them and subdue them before you, so shall you drive them out and make them perish
28:28
quickly as Yahweh has promised you. Do not say in your heart, after Yahweh your God has thrust them out before you, it is because of my righteousness that Yahweh has brought me in to possess this
28:40
land. Whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh is driving them out before you. Not because of your righteousness, or the uprightness of your heart, are you going
28:51
in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations, that Yahweh your God is driving them out before you, that he may confirm the word that Yahweh swore to your fathers, to
29:02
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Know, therefore, that Yahweh your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness. For you
29:12
are a stiff- necked people. Remember and do not forget how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you
29:24
have been rebellious against Yahweh. Even at Horeb, you provoked Yahweh to wrath. And Yahweh was so angry with you, he was ready to destroy you. When I went
29:34
up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that Yahweh made with you, I remained on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights. I ne
29:45
neither ate bread nor drank water. And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of God. And on them were all the words that Yahweh had spoken with you on the mountain, out of
29:57
the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly. At the end of 40 days and 40 nights, Yahweh gave me these two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
30:07
Then Yahweh said to me, "Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have turned aside quickly out of the way I commanded them.
30:19
They have made themselves a metal image." Furthermore, Yahweh said to me, "I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stubborn people. Let me alone that
30:29
I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and I'll make of you a nation mightier and greater than they." So I turned and came down from the mountain, the mountain burning with
30:40
fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. And I looked, and behold, you had sinned against Yahweh your God. You had made yourselves a cast metal calf. You had
30:53
turned aside quickly from the way that Yahweh your God had commanded you. So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. Then I lay prostrate
31:05
before Yahweh as before 40 days and 40 nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the
31:16
sight of Yahweh to provoke him to anger. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that Yahweh bore against you so that he was ready to destroy you. But
31:26
Yahweh listened to me that time also. And Yahweh was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.
31:38
Then I took the sinful thing, that calf you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust. And I
31:50
threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain. at Tabarah also, and at Masa, and at Kibbr Hatava, you provoked Yahweh to wrath. And when
32:01
Yahweh sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, "Go up, take possession of the land that I have given you," then you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God, and did not believe him
32:11
or obey his voice. You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day I knew you. knew you. So I lay prostrate before Yahweh for these 40 days and 40 nights because
32:22
Yahweh had said he would destroy you. And I prayed to Yahweh, "Oh Lord Yahweh, do not destroy your people and your heritage whom you redeemed through your
32:35
greatness whom you brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not regard the stubbornness of this
32:48
people or their wickedness or their sin, lest the land from which you brought us say, "Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them. And because he hated
32:59
them, he has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness. For they are your people and your heritage whom you brought out by your great power
33:09
and by your outstretched arm." At that time Yahweh said to me, "Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to me on the mountain, and make an ark of
33:25
wood. And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets that you broke, and you shall put them in the ark." So I made an an ark of accasha wood, and put two tablets of excuse me, cut two tablets of stone like
33:37
the first, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. And he wrote on the tablets in the same writing as before the 10 words that Yahweh had spoken to you on the mountain out of the
33:48
midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. And Yahweh gave them to me. Then I turned and came down from the mountain and put the tablets in the ark that I had made. And there they are as
34:00
Yahweh commanded me. The people of Israel journeyed from Barat Benyakan to Mazer. There Aaron died and there he was buried and his son Elazar ministered as
34:12
priest in his place. From there they journeyed to good Gda and from good Gda to Yotbata a land with brooks of water. At that time Yahweh set apart the
34:24
tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to stand before Yahweh to minister to him and to bless his name to this day. Therefore, Yahweh, excuse me, therefore Levi has no portion
34:36
or inheritance with his brothers. Yahweh is his inheritance, as Yahweh your God said to him. I myself stayed on the mountain as at the first time 40 days
34:47
and 40 nights, and Yahweh listened to me that time also. Yahweh was unwilling to destroy you. And Yahweh said to me, "Arise, go on your journey at the head
34:58
of the people, so that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them."
35:11
And now, Israel, what does Yahweh your God require of you? But to fear Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
35:21
and to keep the commandments and statutes of Yahweh, which I am commanding you today for your good. Behold, to Yahweh your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth and
35:33
all that is in it. Yet Yahweh set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their seed after them, you above all peoples as you are this day. Circumcise
35:46
therefore the foreskin of your heart and be no longer stiff necked. For Yahweh your God is God of gods and Lord of lords. The great, the mighty, the
35:58
awesome God who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow and loves the sojourer, giving him food and clothing.
36:10
Love the sojourer, therefore, for you were sojourers in the land of Egypt. You shall fear Yahweh your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by
36:20
his name you shall swear. He is your praise. He is your God who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. Your fathers
36:31
went down to Egypt, 70 persons, and now Yahweh your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. You shall therefore love Yahweh your God and keep
36:43
his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always. And consider today, since I am not speaking to your children who have not known or seen it, consider the discipline of Yahweh your
36:55
God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his outstretched arm, his signs and his deeds that he did in Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and to all his land,
37:05
and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots, how he made the waters of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued after you. and how Yahweh has destroyed them to this day.
37:17
And what he did to you in the wilderness until you came to this place. What he did to Daton and Airram, the sons of Elab, the son of Reuben. How the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up
37:29
with their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them in the midst of all Israel. For your eyes have seen all the great work of Yahweh that he did. You shall therefore keep
37:41
the whole commandment that I command you today, that you may be strong and go in and take possession of that land you're going over to possess, and that you may live long in the land that Yahweh swore
37:52
to your fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey. For the land which you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt from which you
38:02
have come, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your feet, like a garden of vegetables. But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys which drinks water by rain
38:14
from heaven. A land that Yahweh your God cares for. The eyes of Yahweh your God always upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. And if
38:26
obeying you obey my commandments that I command you today to love Yahweh your God and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, he will give the
38:37
rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. And he will give you grass and your fields for your livestock, and
38:49
you shall eat and be full. Take care lest your heart be deceived and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them. Then the anger of
39:00
Yahweh will be kindled against you and he will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the land will yield no fruit and you will perish quickly off that good land that Yahweh
39:13
your God has given you. You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand.
39:23
They shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you're sitting in your house, and when you're walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write
39:35
them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that Yahweh swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the
39:45
heavens are above the earth. For if you will be careful to do all this commandment I command you to do, loving Yahweh your God, walking in all his ways, holding fast to him, then Yahweh
39:57
will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. Every place on which the soul of your foot tread shall be yours. Your
40:09
territory shall be from the wilderness to the Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates to the western sea. No one shall be able to stand against you.
40:19
Yahweh your God will lay the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread as he promised you. See, I set before you today a blessing
40:29
and a curse. The blessing if you obey the commandments of Yahweh your God, which I command you today, and the curse if you do not obey the commandments of Yahweh your God. But turn aside from the
40:41
way that I am commanding you today to go after other gods that you have not known. And when Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, you shall set the
40:52
blessing on Mount Gazim, and the curse on Mount Abal. Are they not beyond the Jordan, west of the road toward the going down of the sun, and the land of the Canonites who live in the Arabah
41:04
opposite Gilgal, beside the oak of Mor. For you are to cross over Jordan, and to go in and take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving you. And when you possess it and live in it, you
41:16
shall be careful to do all the statutes and the rules that I set before you
41:27
today. Amen. Indeed. Just Indeed. Just a concluding thought.
41:39
Like the congregation entering into the land, by gathering and holding fast to his word, we remain near to our God. Even though at this time God's people are scattered throughout the whole
41:50
world and in doing the word of God, we find in these things that we have fellowship with him. He promised them that their wisdom would be in in the sight of the nations, their
42:02
keeping of this law, and that the nations would wonder that this nation had such wise statutes and and good rules and that they had a God so near to
42:13
them whenever they called upon them. It echoes to me what was what the Lord said uh in John 6 uh verse 45. It
42:23
is written in the prophets and they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard and learned from the father comes to me. So that the knowledge of God and why
42:35
we even gather together to read, to hear, to study, to discuss the knowledge of God is the central part of our inheritance as his children. So that we are, as Paul says
42:46
to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2, to do our best to present ourselves to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of
42:58
truth. So that the word of God rightly handled as the evidence to one another and the watching world that we are indeed approved by God. So let these words that we have read, that I've read
43:10
today and you're hearing uh be on your hearts. Let's pray. Father, we ask as your people among whom you have set your spirit and your very
43:20
presence and who have been brought out from a greater enemy than Egypt, that of our sin. And we have been brought from under its power into your glorious
43:31
kingdom. And we ask that you would, having written this law upon our hearts, confirm confirm all that you have promised to us and that we would know
43:42
deeper and deeper fellowship with you as we love you and do as you command. We ask and give you praise in Jesus name.
