0:39
I kind of want to finish a little um little survey that we started last time and I don't know that there's um controversial passage is here but I
0:50
do want to look at um just mention a a few of few of the places where the the holy spirit is is mentioned in the prophets um and my
1:04
particular goal was to look at the what uh one of the authors uh calls the um the unction awaiting the Messiah and
1:15
we'll see that most clearly I think in in Isaiah which you might um have guessed um and then we look particularly um also at Micah
1:29
which is not a direct um Prophecy of the Messiah and yet I see this the spirit at at work in the
1:42
the prophecy of the coming Messiah through uh Micah and as I kind of look through the the chapters it's like well there's there's a thread going through there so I want to I want to look at
1:53
some things there but I thought I would I would I would mention um four three other prophets and then uh 2 Chronicles some things that uh just here
2:06
the spirit is here uh the spirit is is working in how the prophets see that and not necessarily toward the uh Advent of the Messiah but again what we see is God
2:19
in Saving his Remnant uh particularly as we look at Zechariah and uh HEI and Nehemiah so I'm just going to uh read a
2:29
few verses uh just again it was an encouragement to me to just read how the prophets just stood tall and um
2:41
encouraged the people um so we'll do these first
2:56
but and I forgot the other one I was yeah I mentioned it and I
3:10
dates the temple rebuilding started when a Remnant returned to Jerusalem about 536 BC and for a couple of years the
3:22
building went on and then there was discouragement among the the people um and as I understand many of those who
3:33
were in Exile chose to stay in Exile so it was a small Remnant that that came back but there was discouragement yes probably some
3:44
forgetfulness but there was a 16-year gap where there was no work on the on the temple and then we read uh hegi and
3:55
and Zechariah I think are contemporaries um contemporaries um so I'm going to I'm going to do those two first I should have written them in that order but um in chapter
4:06
two um God through Hagar reminding them of his Spirit um he says as for the promise which I made you when you came
4:18
out of Egypt my spirit is abiding in your midst do not fear for thus says the Lord of hosts once more in a little while I am going to shake the heavens
4:29
and the Earth the sea also and the dry land I will shake all the nations and they will come with the wealth of all Nations and I will fill this house with Glory says the Lord of hosts the silver
4:41
is mine and the gold is mine declares the Lord of hosts the latter Glory of this house will be greater than the former says the Lord of hosts and in this place I will give peace declares
4:52
the Lord of hosts um that's um that's um I I think not only refers to the times to come IM immediately but I think
5:07
when we we read uh echoed in the New Testament the latter Glory of this house will be greater than the former um certainly that fulfillment comes in the
5:21
coming of Christ and the resurrection but we see the encouragement and he's he's saying my spirit Spirit abides in your midst do
5:32
not fear and then Zachariah who is um again as reading um some of the comments um he was of the Priestly line
5:43
but he was set aside as a prophet and he also prophesied to The Returned but very discouraged Remnant um so sorry write these up here
6:01
um in Zechariah Chapter 4 we read these words then he said to me this is the word of the Lord to zerubabel saying not by might nor by power but by my spirit
6:15
says the Lord of hosts and then in chapter 12 he says I will pour out on the House of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of Grace and of Supplication so that they
6:26
will look on me whom they have pierced and they will mourn for him as One Mourns for an only son and they will weep bitterly over him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn and we see
6:40
again in the New Testament they look back at that um prophecy uh and certainly there were those uh in a very real sense who looked
6:52
on Christ whom they had pierced and they will mourn I think they They Mourn for themselves what has been done um but
7:06
they will they will see this and yet in real time as he speaks it the spirit being poured out on the House of David The Remnant that he
7:28
himself and then in Nehemiah who comes um about BC um he's working on building Jerusalem rebuilding the walls and you know the
7:41
story that they get discouraged and he's there to encourage them and to basically to be the the building guide um and we
7:51
read a couple of verses in chapter 9 of Nehemiah where he um is is reminding them of what God has done previously you
8:03
gave your good spirit to instruct them your Mana you did not withhold from their mouth and you gave them water from their for their thirst however you bore
8:13
with them for many years and admonished them through or by your spirit through your prophets yet they would not give ear um again
8:23
there's forsaking God there's discouragement and yet these prophets are there are there as um to remind them of what God had
8:36
done previously and that God had not forsaken them that his Spirit was there and his Spirit was
8:46
being um was admonishing them by the words of
9:00
um we also see mention of the the spirit in 2 Chronicles and again these are just encouragement to the people um the first
9:12
one from chapter 20 um josaphat is they the armies are coming and I I think the moabites and the ammonites and some of
9:23
the other ites are coming against them and uh Je shapat actually says uh to the people as he's contemplating this
9:35
you know what do we do and seeking the Lord he actually makes this statement um we are powerless before this great
9:45
multitude uh that was what he was feeling and here's what 2 Chronicles chapter 20 tells then in the midst of the assembly
9:57
the spirit of the Lord Came Upon Je AEL and the son of Zachariah the son of beniah the son of gel the son of mattaniah the levite of the sons of Asaf
10:09
and he said listen all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat thus says the Lord to you do not fear or be dismayed because of this
10:22
great multitude for the battle is not yours but yours but God's um again not immediately to do with the
10:33
with the Messiah but God is preserving his people God has and he's Has His prophets he has his people to carry that message uh unashamed and
10:45
unashamed and unafraid um and then in chapter 24 we see this then the spirit of God came on Zachariah the son of jeho the priest and he stood above the people and said to
10:56
them thus God has said why you transgress the Commandments of the Lord and do not Prosper because you have forsaken the Lord he also has forsaken
11:07
you um you um there's the people there's the discouragement the the fear the
11:18
forsaking of the Lord and yet there are men who do Stand Tall by the spirit um and Proclaim uh what the spirit what God is
11:29
doing through the spirit and how um again this that the word here um do not fear or be dismayed for the battle is not yours but
11:51
God's let's look at Micah and again um I may be little off vase here but I as I look at the words of Micah uh through the
12:05
chapters um I I think we can say that that here is um the spirit
12:16
preparing the way for uh through Micah uh for the coming of the
12:28
Messiah um my um my M was battling false prophets if if you kind of boil it down to the
12:39
basics um and the false prophets were turning the people against God and the people were sinning they were doing were doing wrong um and the the prophets were doing
12:54
their best to I guess you could say trying Israel's faithfulness um and this is what Micah says to the
13:04
people about those false prophets in Chapter 2 woe to those who scheme iniquity who work out evil on their beds when morning comes they do it
13:18
for it is in the power of their hands so the false prophets have a a power and they have their schemes and they're working them out and
13:41
in to tell them here's the power that I've been given and the courage that I've been given and um he delivers I I think a
13:52
compelling rebuke to the the nation of Israel for uh their sin and and being carried Away by these false prophets um kind of jumping in the middle of his uh
14:06
Speech to them but this is what he says when they have something to bite with their teeth they cry peace but against him who puts nothing in their mouths
14:17
they declare holy war therefore it will be night for you without vision and darkness for you without divination the sun will go down on the prophets and the day will become dark over them the sear
14:29
will be ashamed and the divers will be embarrassed indeed they will all cover their mouths because there is no answer from God on the other hand I am filled
14:41
with power with the spirit of the Lord and with Justice and courage to make known to Jacob his rebellious act even to Israel his
14:52
sin so again he's not saying of himself I have the power power he says um I am filled with power with the holy spirit
15:04
with Justice and and courage um to make known to Jacob um so one of the the words in that
15:17
paragraph is they the false prophets peace and I think if you follow um at least I think
15:31
you'll see why that's interesting that he's using that word
15:41
there but Micah's message even though he makes known to Jacob his rebelliousness his sin is not just full of judgment in chapter four he uses the
15:52
phrase several times the last day or in those days
16:06
he says' and it will come about in the last days that the mountain of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the mountains it will be raised up above the hills and the peoples will stream to it many nations will come and
16:17
say come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the house of God of the god of Jacob that he may teach us about his ways and that he we may walk in his paths for from from Zion will go
16:30
forth the law even the word of the Lord from Jerusalem and he will judge between many peoples and render decisions for Mighty distant Nations then they will Hammer their swords into plowshares and
16:42
their Spears into pruning hooks Nation will not lift up sword against nation and never again will they train for war each of them will sit under his Vine and under his fig tree with no one to make
16:54
them afraid for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken through though all all the peoples walk each in the name of his God as for us we will walk in the name
17:05
of the Lord Our God forever and ever I think he's preparing them for there are days coming and again not the
17:17
immediate days perhaps but the encouraging them that that God is still on his throne that even though the peoples walk after their own Gods
17:30
we stand firm we walk in the name of the Lord Our God forever and then in chapter
17:44
five we see that the power that he was given by the spirit that he mentions here we see that it comes to me comes forward uh
17:56
very powerfully in in chapter 5 as he prophesies of the Messiah he says now muster yourselves in troops Daughters of troops they have
18:07
laid Siege against us with a rod they will Smite the judge of Israel on the cheek but as for you Bethlehem EPA too little to be among the clans of Judah
18:18
from you one will go forth for me to be ruler in Israel his goings forth are from long ago from the days of Eternity therefore he will give them up until the
18:29
time when she who is in labor has born a child then the remainder of his Brethren will return to the sons of Israel and he will raise he will arise and Shepherd
18:40
his flock in the strength of the Lord in the Majesty of the name of the Lord his God and they will remain because at that time he will be great to the ends of the
20:05
Isaiah speaks uh generally of the holy spirit's work in guiding the nation of Israel um in the wilderness so there are passages that we we see that the spirit
20:17
has been um guiding them all along and he reminds them of that at in various places for example in uh chapter 63
20:43
um he says as the cattle which go down into the valley the spirit of the lord gave them rest so you led your people to make for yourself a glorious name um again just
20:56
again just uh I I use the word uh that some of the commentators use speaking generally um I'm hoping that after this
21:06
uh this class that we [Music] never um really take the word generally speaking of the Holy Spirit as we might
21:16
generally think of the weather um weather um but this but this is we see a lot of the things that we've talked about over the past couple of
21:27
months of the spirit of of guiding um and again and again reminding us reminding us of the fact of of the presence of God
21:39
through the through the spirit another one that is uh subject that we've talked about before is the holy spirit as the
21:50
executive of God's will in chapter 34 of Isaiah we read uh for the Lord has a day of Vengeance a year of
22:01
recompense for the cause of Zion and then he goes on uh later verses to say to them seek from the book of the Lord
22:11
and read not one of these will be missing none will lack its mates so he's speaking of how he's going to take care of the animals and all of the of the
22:23
creation that he's done and I think to tell them if I'm doing it for these Beasts of the earth and the fish
22:35
of the sea I'll do it for you but he says None will lack its mate for his mouth has commanded and his Spirit has gathered them um to
23:20
um I think Isaiah pretty much covers all of the all the bases as I hopefully we'll see um see um and obviously um if you've read Isaiah
23:32
you know that he has specific uh prophetic passages um and what he
23:55
calls so we look at them as the the servant songs the servant of the Lord in chapter in chapter 48 listen to me oh Jacob even Israel whom I called I am he I am the first I
24:09
am also the last surely my hand founded the Earth and my right hand spread out the heavens when I call to them they stand together assemble all of you and
24:20
listen who among them has declared these things the lord loves him he will carry out his good pleasure on Babylon and his arm will be against the caldan I even I
24:32
have spoken indeed I have called him I have brought him and he will make his ways successful come near to me listen to this from the first I have not spoken
24:44
in secret from the time it took place I was there and now the Lord God has sent me and his
24:55
Spirit um again I I think Isaiah covers um the the spirit's work his ministry the
25:07
things that um he's doing and then looking now at the servant of the Lord looking at the coming of the Messiah and
25:19
Messiah and um he um he speaks of the spirit's work um in anointing the Messiah with the necessary unction for for messiah's Ministry and
25:32
in the midst of that um as I read this it was like well wait a minute there's several things going on in here uh in the midst of speaking of the messiah's
25:43
ministry there's ministry there's blessings for the church um and for the people of God um and it's it doesn't
25:54
seem to seem to be um it's not separated it's part of the of the prophecy uh that that goes together and
26:07
yet acknowledging that it is all coming from God by uh the fact again that he's saying God sent me and his Spirit um this is chapter
26:19
61 that I'm going to read from and um I don't know the the word of
26:47
Isaiah the spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to The Afflicted he has sent me to bind up the Brokenhearted to Proclaim Liberty to captives and free
26:58
freedom to prisoners to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of Vengeance of our God to comfort all who mourn to Grant those who mourn in
27:10
Zion giving them a Garland instead of Ashes the oil of gladness instead of mourning the mantle of Praise instead of a spirit of fainting so they will be
27:20
called Oaks of righteousness the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified um glorified um to me it's all there the the that's the
27:34
the spirit of the Lord coming upon uh Christ the lord has anointed me to bring good news and how do we know
27:45
that well you go to Luke chapter 4 Jesus remember he stands up in front of the assembly and they hand him the scroll of
27:56
Isaiah and he unrolls it to Isaiah 61 and reads and then when he closes it he says he began to say to
28:08
them today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing um to me pretty clear uh ex excellently clear and
28:20
yet all the things that he mentions are for the church and uh that that idea of uh just proclaim the favorable year of
28:31
the Lord um and yet um and to me it kind of dovetails with the quote um that Chuck has in the in the news and notes
28:42
from Thomas Shriner um so if I read this and then read the other uh to me it seems to make a whole lot of of sense
28:53
and um I I guess that's too trite to say it's it's the
29:05
of God's justice along with his Mercy um he has sent me to bind the broken haret let's see to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day
29:17
of Vengeance of our God and Shriner writes The Good the kindness of God cannot be truly appreciated as a gift of his grace unless the severity of God is
29:28
is contemplated as the just penalty for forsaking him um to me they say the same thing uh the pro claiming the favorable
29:38
year and yet a day of Vengeance God is a holy God he's not to be trifled
29:59
with so here here um very familiar passage I've run out of room so we'll just put it over here chapter 11 and
30:28
um some would uh in there Christmas pageants or whatever um on Tuesday night we'll be reading these passages but what we see here is a measure of with which
30:38
the spirit was to shed upon Christ from the time of his coming in the flesh um we've already talked about the anointing
30:48
so prefiguring uh this even though it comes later in the in the book but the spirit resting upon Christ the spirit
30:59
coming upon him put upon him and again to me it's kind of a a a word picture of the anointing oil upon the head and upon
31:11
the beard uh trickling down for the Mi uh the uh discharge of Christ's mediatorial
31:22
Christ's mediatorial Ministry and um I'll I'll make a comment when we we get done I want to quote quot from one of the authors um but again what you see here
31:33
is the Messiah and the spirit not as one and the same as many would do or the spirit as just a a force or a
31:44
power um they're working together here um starting in verse one of chapter 11
31:54
then a chute will spring from the stem of Jesse and a branch from his roots will bear fruit the spirit of the Lord will rest on him the spirit of wisdom
32:04
and understanding the spirit of counsel and strength the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord and He will Delight in the fear of the Lord and He will not
32:14
judge by what his eyes see nor make a decision by what his ears hear but with righteousness he will judge the poor and decide with fairness for The Afflicted of the earth and he will strike the
32:26
Earth with the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked and the righteousness will be the belt about his loins and faithfulness
32:36
the belt about his waist um so that's Isaiah
32:47
11 it's the spirit is the author of what we're reading here the spirit of Lord will rest upon him but what what you see the work of of
33:01
Jesus when the this spirit that gives the counsel the strength the knowledge the fear of the Lord and when Christ Delights in the
33:11
fear of the Lord what we see is the fullness of the glory of God in his ministry comes out
33:22
so there's there's a working together this the spirit on Christ and then Christ um in his righteousness and his
33:34
faithfulness um is is on display and the people don't get this uh even in Jesus day they're confused about
33:47
who is this servant who is the this one who's calling himself the son of man and what we read in Isaiah 42 um we'll see Jesus repeating to them
34:00
in Matthew in Matthew 12 in Isaiah we read behold my servant whom I uphold My Chosen One in whom my soul Delights I have put my spirit upon
34:12
Him He will bring forth Justice to the Nations he will not cry out or raise his voice nor make his voice heard in the street a bruised Reed he will not break
34:22
and a dimly burning wi Wick he will not extinguish he will Faithfully bring forth Justice he will not be disheartened or crushed until he has established Justice in the earth and the
34:35
coastlands will wait expectantly for his law and this comes in the middle uh in chapter 12 of Matthew of where he's he's
34:45
been confronted uh by the uh the leaders or rulers in Jerusalem about the Sabbath day and what your
34:56
disciples do and all of these things and declared that um you know the Sabbath um was given for for man um and calls
35:09
himself the son of man but at the end of the argument he withdraws with his followers and he tells them of this
35:23
passage about passage about himself and many followed his words and were enamored I
35:33
think with the way he spoke but we still get in Matthew 12 uh this question people are talk as as if they're kind of looking at Jesus and withdrawing into
35:45
little groups into their little huddle by themselves and one of them says this this man cannot be the son of David can he so there seeing him they're seeing
35:59
this prophecy come to life before them and yet they're still wondering who who this this man
36:16
is Isaiah goes on in chapter 44 and I believe that this Echoes uh what we read last week in Joel 2 so I'll read a verse from Joel 2 um to me is
36:27
it's uh coming right alongside Joel writes and it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who
36:39
Escape as the Lord has said even among the survivors whom the Lord calls Isaiah is trying to give them that
36:49
same message there's the it's the message of hope it's the message of mercy and Grace but now listen oh Jacob my servant and
37:00
Israel whom I have chosen thus says the Lord who made you and formed you from the womb who will help you do not fear oh Jacob my servant and
37:10
you jesurun whom I have chosen for I will pour out water on the Thirsty land and streams on the dry ground I will pour out my spirit on your Offspring and my blessings on your descendants and
37:22
they will spring up among the grass like poppers by streams of water this this one will say I am the Lords and that one will call on the name of Jacob and
37:32
another will write on his hand belonging to the Lord and will name Israel's name with honor um the pouring out of the
37:44
spirit is as we saw in Joel um written about here um and again the words that we saw in the prophets do not
37:55
fear the the I will pour out my spirit the promises of God for them um and finally uh in
38:06
chapter 59 um he writes for they will fear the name of the Lord from the West and his glory from the rising of the Sun for he will come like a rushing stream which
38:18
the wind of the Lord drives a redeemer will come to Zion and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob declares the Lord as for me this is my Covenant with them
38:30
says the Lord my spirit which is upon you and my words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth nor from the mouth of your Offspring nor from the mouth of your
38:41
offsprings offsprings says the Lord From Now and Forever um the spirit at work the coming of the Messiah the anointing
38:53
the the victory the promise uh the Covenant that he's made um I will be with you I will be guiding
39:03
you I will be your power presence in the Holy Spirit Holy Spirit um and a again I'm I'm going to try to make sure that we're not
39:15
conflating Christ and the Spirit uh this is from George uh smen which um I think um kind of helps me understand um
39:32
let me read the sentence but I think it helps me put some of the questions of at the very Basics do we see the old test uh the spirit in the Old Testament
39:45
definitely do we see all of his personality I don't think so but we do see him working as a person of the Trinity even though the Trinity
39:57
is not word that comes out of the Bible smon writes this one conclusive argument which may be adduced the mission of Christ is never
40:09
ascribed to the spirit and that the persons of the Trinity who are all referred to in the passage invariably act according to their order of
40:19
subsistence to the Lord his God and they will remain because uh sorry I missed the sentence
40:33
yeah sorry um in the order of substance in the godhead the spirit is here said to be sent along with the sun and dis and indissolubly conjoined with the Sun from
40:45
the moment of incarnation he is there he's working he's a person he's not a who or he is a who he's not a what the spirit is sent
40:59
from God and he's sent along with the Messiah and together they bring us
41:09
salvation and they bring us knowledge and cause us to be brought into the kingdom of kingdom of God let us
41:24
pray our heavenly father we rejoice in the words of scripture sure as we see them come to life in the New Testament even from the mouth of Jesus
41:35
himself proclaiming what you have done from ages past from creation or even before to the foundations of the world
41:46
you brought it forth by your spirit you anointed the Messiah by the spirit and yet you have poured out on men and women
41:56
and children and children the blessings and the mercy the grace through the Holy Spirit to cause us to
42:07
worship the Messiah and cause us to know God the father and so we rejoice in these things we thank you that you have done them and we are grateful in
