0:09
wasn't quite sure that I was going to go the direction that we're going hopefully going this morning in our study of the Holy Spirit um except that last time we met two weeks ago um the question came
0:20
up and I realized that um there were things that I had not uh really meditated on on um and I I guess
0:31
that's the word I'm I'm going to use this morning is um I'm not sure this is so much so much um me teaching you as some things that
0:42
I've been meditating on because for whatever reason um and I Rejoice um these things of the spirit in the Old
0:54
Testament what is the Old Testament history of the spirit and they mention uh two weeks ago that someone asked about Genesis 1 verse 2 the the Holy
1:05
Spirit brooding uh hovering over the faces of the deep uh what does that mean and uh that's where obviously uh the
1:50
um like to um start where I started was kind of being reminded as I was looking through some notes and uh connection back to Plum line class couple of years ago
2:01
um just a couple of I don't know what I would call them um just um just reminders um and I'm going to use OT for
2:53
Trinity we're very familiar with John 14516 where Jesus um explains things of
3:03
the spirit and sometimes we want to immediately apply those to for example
3:13
1 um it does not explain three persons in one God but and I think it's Warfield who
3:25
says we go too far if we immediately in Genesis jump to to the Trinity but we also go too far if we deny that there is a person in the Old
3:38
Testament of the Holy Spirit and so there is there is um those kind of guidelines the rails to to keep in mind um the Old Testament
3:51
does not seem to um and I guess this is where I've been meditating on on this idea
4:11
um it does not reveal so much the personality of the
4:27
is we see the holy spirit's role in creation and the Redemptive work of God even beginning in the Old
4:38
Testament because almost immediately and uh someone wondered if we were going to actually um if it would be appropriate to talk about the flood this morning um
4:50
but the fall of Man and how the holy spirit is working until the Messiah comes is a part of the Old Testament so we see
5:03
him at work and and again um just kind of befuddled by someone could read the Old Testament
5:16
and not and not see the person of the Holy Spirit even if if this personality is not fully developed at least the work of the Holy
5:28
Spirit what he is is doing but what is God doing in the Old Testament related to the Holy
5:46
Spirit if we were to look at two heads God in the world and God in his
5:57
people and you may want to take exception with God in his his people but what I see and we're not going to get there this
6:11
morning but as we begin to look at what the holy spirit's work is in the Old Testament he is working with God's people and we'll see that in the um the
6:25
way in which he brings Supernatural powers um understanding wisdom of those who for example built the Tabernacle the the
6:37
craftsmanship that was there and the the incredible work that had to be done to get as Moses had outlined everything
6:48
just so so there is there is this aspect but there's also an ethical aspect where the spirit is working in
7:00
people giving them spiritual Insight even in the Old Testament and again it's things that and I meditate on
7:11
those ideas and kind of challenge that and I I have come to the conclusion that true um and I hopefully will be able to bring
7:23
that out as we see okay specifically what does the Holy Spirit do
7:34
um the fundamentals of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit um again this is what I believe they're common to both the Old Testament and the New Testament even though it's not fully establish the
7:46
Trinity the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit the what we see there in terms of the spirit's work um all all of the
7:57
attributes that are described to to the Divine person of the holy spirit in the Old Testament Old Testament agree I I mean I think as Christians we
8:07
would we would be shocked um we'd be horrified if they didn't agree but I think we need to establish that we need to say that they fully agree with what
8:19
we what is revealed about the Holy Spirit uh and his work in the New Testament does that make sense anybody want to challenge that yes I challeng it
8:30
but I got a u newsletter from a seminary that I once attended that shall not be named and the U I read it this time because the theme was confessionalism I
8:40
thought this will be good yeah it was really good um they interviewed one of the students who said um you know they already established the doctrine of the Trinity way back when
8:51
why do we need to worry about it now the thought being that since the church has already wrestled with all of this we just accept standard set oops I think I gave it
9:02
gave it away you know we just accept what and a lot of people actually do that they just accept what has always been taught and then generation after generation you get
9:12
further and further away because the actual investigation of the scriptures is Generations removed and after all you just don't even believe it anymore they
9:23
don't understand that that's not how it works you don't have to wrestle with it but yeah we need to understand scure
9:35
does this and and yet even knowing that that the spirit is working there is there is a mystery there and there is a depth to
9:47
this um what exactly is the spirit doing and how is is he doing that and um even uh
9:59
well I guess again just one of those things kind of been passing to the author perhaps but uh reminding us that um when Jesus talks to the
10:10
Jews and uses the word the spirit in fact he says your fathers rejected the spirit and you're following what your fathers are doing think about these guys
10:23
they're Jews they're monotheists monoth monotheists monoth and yet the idea of the spirit didn't at
10:34
least you know we don't read it in the pages of scripture where they rose up and said what are you talking about Jesus or what are you talking about Paul
10:44
you know some other being we are monotheists and monotheists and so even those Jews that would know the
10:54
Old Testament they would carry the the work of the Spirit already is in their minds and so um again that agreement between
11:06
the old and the new maybe it doesn't spell everything spell everything out but it's there and as I began to to read and dig a little further it's like
11:17
there this is a this is a mine with Rich gems in it what the spirit is doing and for me just helping me to understand oh
11:28
when I see the spirit now in the New Testament when I see it him in John and I see him in Romans oh this is the
11:39
background this is where we see the spirit at at work um the phrase that I have adopted here
12:16
I think that carries from the Old Testament Genesis 1 all the way through scripture the executive of the godhead some call him the administrator um again I still like the
12:31
uh influencer but he's the executive he's carrying out the will of God and it's a doctrine that as I can understand it and
12:45
I I read a few things um that um some written about kind of the history
12:55
of to me the critics or the the unbelievers the aists will try to take us back to mythologies uh particularly the Babylonian Babylonian mythologies which
13:07
I don't know at all and I can't remember the the um the character that they reference um reference um but and some would try to take us back
13:18
to Greek culture of the day um and there's nothing in those things that I I know of and again
13:29
and I'm limited but the doctrine of the holy spirit is is exclusive to the Bible I guess is what I want to say um there doesn't seem to be any other things that
13:42
that speak of a spirit this way a person and a personality uh This Way um and yet what we have here is the
13:55
Divine principle one wrote The Divine principle of principle of activity everywhere at work in the world that's the definition of the
14:08
executive the Divine activity everywhere at work in the world that's a pretty broad
14:21
sweeping incredible and yet credible statement the executive of the godhead the Holy Spirit
14:44
a first uh ground rule I guess establishment I'm going to now give you the outline I I grew up um in the day before PowerPoint and all that and uh my
14:57
dad you know as an engineer and when I had to do engineering presentations and even stuff in in college he said there basically three things you want to do in
15:08
a presentation you you want to tell them what you're going to tell them you tell them and then you tell them what you told them and uh so that's what I'm going to do we're
15:21
going to talk about the history the Old Testament history of the spirit but now I'm going to tell you what I'm going to tell you over the next 3 months
15:37
um yeah I should have L some of that up there but I'll do this
16:48
my dictionary says that I can the OS on the end I can pronounce the same chaos to Cosmos um my internet's not working so I didn't get to look up Carl San how he used to pronounce km or something I
16:59
don't know do you remember um it's again it's amazing to me rank atheist and yet displaying the beauty the order the just
17:15
the incredible created Universe um I I don't know I not sure I'd want to be around for that conversation he had with god um cha
17:29
we know right but but Cosmos is an orderly harmonious systematic universe and that's what the spirit
17:40
brings the again he's executing the the God God's will in the universe but he's bringing order Beauty
17:55
systematizing the the world at God's God's Will and hopefully we'll get to to look at uh
18:05
the beginning of Genesis one um where that comes in
18:25
world we we meet him by the work of the of the spirit
18:44
and because he appears because he comes to Earth um I think we can call him the imminent Spirit um I think this is a word that uh I don't know whether it's loople that I read or
18:57
or Warfield or someone like like that the the imminent Spirit the spirit of God as
19:14
existence um one author used the the word Persistence of all things that um even so far as to
19:25
say that he is the originating cause of of all of all light all life all order in the universe he is the source
19:41
that um and that's what we'll try to look at in Genesis 1 is how how do we see that coming about but uh the the the idea
19:58
even the in Genesis 1 god with his people God in his world okay people are not here yet but but God is in his world um we we need to be very careful
20:08
however and I'll try to emphasize this as we go forward we're not talking about pantheism or cos it's a new word to me
20:27
cosmotheism that God is in everything um everything um we'll see we'll see that um and I'll go ahead and and spill the beans on this one but the the spirit
20:38
Broods over or hovers over but he is not merged with and to me I think that's a very
20:48
important thing uh because you'll meet people that will talk well God is love and everything is God and so everything is you know there there is maybe it's a
21:01
a western spin on pantheism but it's a dangerous thing dangerous thing to to
21:20
do my Greek professor said I'm not supposed to do this if you have an A You're supposed to have a b but there is a there's an one and a two under the a so maybe I get away with
21:31
it there I don't know I could never um I I like outlines but only when other people write them for me so I can see Chuck is much better at outlining
22:12
um some call it um trying to think of the term they term they use um it it is cosmological this is cosmological this
22:25
is yeah I can't think of it starts with a t I didn't write it down because it wasn't a going to be from my own vocab
22:56
um the world the creation this is God working in creating this is the kingdom this is the inhabited world this is people
23:15
here Well everybody's his people they're made in His image but we're specifically looking at here how he works among
23:38
nation right and again there like I said there's probably a better term for than just using the word kingdom here but he is the king and it's his world so I I think of it in terms of this is the
24:12
say because he's already working on this here after the fall he's working on the second creation okay because that is a that is
24:22
Men Women children yes Romans he is the both the vessels ofon and mercy and
24:32
the vessels the vessels ofh and judment are his CL so yeah it's all mankind some under
24:42
re of re of Grace not still the whole thing it's not like God's kingdom and the devil's Kingdom right that's notal all right all
24:55
right um I'll look up the word and I'll I'll tell you what one of the theologians says uh what he calls that I it's just not coming to my mind uh
25:18
um what we'll see here the spirit's activity from the fall to the Messiah um again this is related to the in and the with his people
25:29
a lot of times what we'll see is that um he's he's he's he's using people again for God's purposes he's carrying out the will and purpose
25:39
of God in creation and in restoration here of of people but sometimes it's again it's the
25:50
Craftsman but sometimes we even see the spirit work in Moses day when Moses said I I wish all of you had the spirit there is something that he understood and knew about the Holy Spirit working
26:04
with him and in him as he wrote and as he carried things out and so uh we'll see that but what we have to
26:15
understand here is this activity uh compared to the Messianic age when we we see him
26:25
coming um in Believers is this is partial it's um as as one wrote It's
26:36
occasional and it's special but it also includes that which is prophetic and so it's really broad from
26:47
some things that you again the workmen all the way to the prophets and all the purposes of God in between
26:57
that's what we see in this in this period and it's not in every book but it's in books like Nehemiah and
27:09
then of course in Isaiah Ezekiel we see those things so there is a there is a path and a thread but it's it's not one
27:20
uh that you can systematically go from book to book and Trace it's looking at it as a whole um and seeing parts of his activity in
27:34
different books seems It's Easy from a systematic standpoint to talk about the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament consistently use
27:45
New Testament assumtions whereas seems profit to ruminate on that Holy Spirit was not some guarantee to the to the
27:56
camp of isra not some some presence of God they could take for granted and certainly was not apparently a permanent personal until it
28:07
came without meure Upon Jesus Christ ruminate on how special that is yeah the spirit of God would occasionally Rush upon their judges and Kings is extraordinary right or or Pharaoh saying
28:19
of Joseph which I think is the next time the spirit of God phrase used in Genesis is when Pharaoh says Joseph who can we find like this God
28:31
in but that's extraordinary when they that the US yes extraordinary yeah the comment is
28:45
how special in the Old Testament that it it could not be it was not just a an assumption but it was something that
28:58
Came Upon people he was someone who um again this is Warfield his alliteration here the inspiring Spirit but there is
29:10
an inspiration and especially when we um and hopefully we will um yeah what what you're getting is my
29:20
my meditation coming back here but um one of the things I realized from two years ago three years ago doing this study is how deep and
29:37
awesome and a and a mystery of Jesus walking keeping in step with the spirit and yet when we read Genesis 1
29:49
and we go to John 1 where in the beginning and in the beginning you know he was in the beginning with God we we we even then our our
30:04
minds cannot help but wanted to bring those connections uh together and want to see um how the word of God given by
30:15
the spirit of God here continues the God now not so in creation but now establishing his people
30:28
and establishing and establishing a path for the Messiah um we can't help but already start to to bring some of those things
30:43
together um in here what we'll see is the supernatural activity of the spirit um in the power the uh how it is
30:59
the foundation the The Establishment the development of God's Kingdom so that when Jesus when Jesus comes we know that he says the kingdom
31:12
is here and we see that development in in here in this uh in the Old Testament from the fall to the
31:48
um the phrase is not used but but I am beginning to see it
32:04
the grace of God this the spirit of of Grace again if you if you like the
32:23
spirit he's he's working in the spirits of people even as he's working sort of on the outside establishing the
32:34
nation establishing their worship practices and all of the accouterments of that but he's also working in the
32:44
hearts of people preparing them for the kingdom um even as he works through one nation and I I hope we don't we don't miss that
32:57
that ethical character of the spirit in the Old Testament yeah in the Old Testament doesn't that se to for the
33:07
most part follow the three offes within the nation except for the prophet priest cple couple of Artisans that you read about in terms of the
33:19
Tabernacle it seems that the spirit one of the distinctions between the nation of Israel and the church you read in the Old Testament what you
33:29
read in 1 Corinthians 12 13- 14 is that it was in the offices of the king priest
33:45
muchi different yes different yes um I I think that's probably true but
33:57
I I guess I can't help but thinking that there there were people that we meet at the beginning of the New Testament that had that the that the expectations and
34:09
expectations and the I don't know their hearts are prepared somehow Simeon I guess that's what I'm thinking but you're you're right I mean most of what we're going to look at is the Kings how he influenced
34:21
David and Saul and um the judges Samson okay and of course the prophets how did all that work out um so yes the majority
34:34
will be of of that level but um I think there are some examples of of lesser gnes that um also we see the influence
35:09
God way that pred them to be in that place at that time you know's point also the special of it in the New Testament you consider that the vast majority of it
35:20
was prophets priests and kings in the Old Testament when he says we are a royal priesthood royal priesthood kind of cool it's literally the outworking of those offices that God
35:32
honored and led in the people of Israel is now all body of church yeah I mean standing on this side that
35:45
certainly looks like what what is happening and this preparation here for this um I think it's
35:55
coming um coming um all right we we have a few minutes left um is it warm in here it's very warm okay um I'm using one of those that does
36:10
not uh we we joke we were on a road trip somewhere and it was cold and was really cold but I was driving I
36:22
didn't notice and my wife said do you think we could turn on the heat there the children's lip are turning blue now um and so I my I don't know my
36:32
thermostat is out of whack I guess for most people most people um but today um because I'm up here I feel the heat um what
36:45
is what is the spirit's work here we'll we'll have a chance I guess just to introduce it and I I will say that I am really struggling with the uh the Hebrew
36:56
uh words uh even though um supposedly I've had Hebrew and studied these things um but looking at them now coming back
37:06
um and I read the different translations uh and don't and the theologians don't agree on uh Genesis 1 one and two uh what the words mean um so we'll we'll
37:18
introduce those and then let you uh do some meditation and reading over the week um
37:45
um the spirit is here and he's here to stay um he's he's the executive he's the administrator um and when I read and I think this is what I
37:55
understand from the Hebrew when when When God says Let There Be that's not um as as one author put it an announcement that's an
38:06
imperative and I think if we see that we understand how and how and why the spirit is here because he's the executive to carry
38:20
out those orders from here to here okay um I'm going to read from from my Bible
38:30
and again um try to watch the time here and I'll give you uh the I guess two perspectives on Genesis 1 1 and
38:43
2 um in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth and the Earth was formless and void and darkness was over
38:54
the surface of the deep and the spirit of God God was moving over the surface of the waters and verse three then God said let there be light and there was
39:07
light there is a lot packed in there okay the question is the terms and Chuck can say it in the
39:20
Hebrew I can all stumble over it but the toou V boho the formless and void what do those
39:32
actually mean um some call it waste uh what is it waste and um
40:07
lold um who goes into great depth in the Hebrew as I'm I'm reading uh disagrees with aw pink uh and pink um is the first time I've read it um that in depth um
40:22
but that the idea of the unformed means means it doesn't have a definite shape it has not been
40:32
structured in um a definite world or universe and empty means it's waiting to
40:42
be inhabited so this would be somebody like loopholes taking the the meaning of the Hebrew terms Pink goes to to me the other side
40:56
and he and he he gets out of this waste that it's ravaged that it's been there's been an
41:09
upheaval and he would read I I believe Genesis 1 one as not in the beginning but in beginning God created the heavens
41:20
and the Earth and then he says sin entered somehow into this perfect world and created one two this
41:32
waste and waste and void um and again it's caused me to kind of go back and meditate and pray and try
41:43
to understand Mark yeah that second view has often been put forward to try to explain the rebellion of Satan which event from the scriptures
41:56
happened before happened before Adam and Eve were created it was already fallen Wicked so yeah a lot of theologians that
42:09
theologians that idea something had happened enough EV
42:41
Satan Jeremiah as well that's of judment isra it's not just it's been around for a long time okay all right well the first one I had read that listed out what I had trouble with is if sin entered the world and then it's like two
42:53
paragraphs down he quotes Romans 5 because of one man sin the world but man had not been created yet so what happened in there some people use it for
43:07
theistic evolution that there was the world and God started you know wound it up and put it out there and it was up to Evolution to make a structure out of that and what
43:17
we want to point to is I think where the scripture points to that there's a reason that the spirit is
43:29
and again L lupold doesn't like the word brooding okay other people do um because he says brooding is what a bird does over its
43:41
over its eggs but in Deuteronomy 32 the same word is used of an eagle hovering over its young and you don't
43:52
brood over birds that are already hatched and so I'm I'm meditating on that one okay um hovering or the idea is
44:02
to be moved or born along okay the spirit is spirit is there at there at creation what we need to discover is why
44:14
is he there and what is he doing there and that's where we'll be heading let's go ahead and pray Our Father we do thank you for the
44:25
scriptures we we thank you for for the work and the the power the the help and yes certainly the Comfort but also the the advocacy of the
44:39
holy spirit in our lives but we pray that you he might guide us into all the truth and again that we would not store
44:49
it up as just learning and knowledge but father that you would use it to build your your church build the body of Christ to be a glory and an
44:59
honor to you and strengthen people's lives to walk in a manner that pleases you honors you we ask that you would do these things in Christ's name amen
