chapter 8 as we come to the end of this magnificent chapter the end of this uh particularly in installment of our Series in Romans

we'll be looking at um what is widely considered one of the most magnificent passages of a

chapter passage that is perhaps the most exhilarating and encouraging for all believers beginning in verse 31 through the end of the chapter I'd like to read the entire passage and ask Aaron Wells

Beast that Beast was Rome the Roman Empire the Roman Empire is perhaps the most written about period of History it

also serves as the backdrop of novels and movies from Star Wars to Hunger Games you notice in these movies when the emperor

the emperor convenes his Supporting Cast it's always the Senate Rome has made an indelible mark on human history especially Western history our history to the point that

many many many many conservatives love to compare the Republic of the United States to Republic in Republic in Rome if you've ever studied Roman

history you would realize that the analogy is far closer to the now defunct USSR than to the us we have romanticized

Rome we have made it into some glorious period of history when it was in fact

what Daniel sees in his night vision Rome was the epitome of human government that was the essence of the two visions one that Nebuchadnezzar saw

the other that Daniel himself the the statue in Daniel chapter 2 and the the animals followed by this Indescribable Powerful

Indescribable Powerful Beast these were the progression of human government until in Rome it reached the epitome of human government transformed into an unyielding

dispassionate and inexorable machine again much more like the Soviet Union than the United

States the gears of the Roman Legions as well as Roman law ground all that Rome conquered into conquered into dust the

dust the Jews would soon experience this under the armies of espian and then Titus in ad70 though they wouldn't learn the

Rome this was the situation in life to which Paul is addressing his letter this is the city the heart of the

this is what the Roman Christians face day to day to day and it is the situation in which they found or were found by Christ and sought to live for his glory

by Augustus and had been strengthened by tiberias and even the ineptitude of Caligula could not alter the fact that Rome was the dominant power a power that

the world had never seen before this is the mountain of Daniel 2 into which that Stone cut without

hands collided crushing it excuse me the statue crushing it into dust and itself growing into a mighty Mountain but this

was to be a process and Rome wasn't going to go quietly so as Paul writes to the Romans he is aware that they are living within

the most powerful military and political entity that human history had ever experienced at Paul's foresight as

Paul's looking ahead he's planning on visiting Rome but he doesn't have to be there to know what the Roman Believers were facing actually what all believers were facing at that time as a prophet he

was able to write to the Believers in in Corinth that in view of this present distress those who are married should live as if not those who bought and sold

should do so as if not his Series in 1 Corinthians 7 of the as if not statements that we should hold the world Loosely in our grip because a great

distress was about to come upon the church as a Roman citizen which Paul was he was certainly aware that Caesar would not tolerate the announcement and

propagation that there was another king another Lord another savior Rome was unyielding in its persecution of secret

of secret associations they were to be sought out and there were informers everywhere Rome was a police state and people would inform on members

of their own family like we think of North Korea today or again during the Cold War of the Soviet Union this was Rome only unlike the Koreans and unlike

the Russians the Russians the Romans knew how to do it right and they could sniff out a conspiracy or a perceived conspiracy and would respond with all

the might of Rome to crush it in its cradle Christianity didn't stand a chance this this little sect a part of a

hated religion Judaism didn't stand a chance and even Paul as a Jew knew that as Jesus said in this world you will

have tribulation John tells us that friendship with the world is enmity with God but the Jews knew that the opposite was also true that friendship with God

was enmity with the world or meant enemity from the world they were A persecuted people of course but none were so Adept at

persecution as the Romans we need to understand understand that it is in that light and in that historical situation that we read these

that as John saw when he was on the aisle of Patmos this is the circumstance in which Paul has written this letter to the Romans these are the

Christians that he longs to be with and to impart some gift to them and yet to receive from them also a spiritual gift as well as assistance in his future

Journeys even to Spain you see the power of the Roman Empire didn't bother Paul it didn't dissuade him from going

there it didn't dissuade him from going further because he knew that the true king had inaugurated his kingdom he knew that the stone cut without hands had now

struck that image of Nebuchadnezzar and that though it would take time the promises of a God who is faithful meant that that that structure

that incredible entity of Roman power would in fact be ground to dust itself John sees his vision again on

Patmos then I stood on the sand of the sea and I saw a beast rising up out of the sea doesn't that sound like Daniel's Vision it is Daniel's Vision having

seven heads and 10 horns and on this horn 10 crowns and on his head a Blasphemous name now the Beast which I saw was like a leopard his feet were

like the feet of a bear his mouth like the mouth of a lion the dragon gave him power his throne and great Authority and I saw one of the heads as if it had been

mortally wounded and his deadly wound was healed and all the world marveled and followed the Beast so they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the Beast and they worshiped the Beast

saying who is like the Beast who is able to make war with him and he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and he was given authority

to continue to for 42 months then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name his Tabernacle and those who dwell in

heaven it was granted to him to make war with the Saints and to overcome them and Authority was given to him over every tribe tongue and Nation all who dwell on

the earth will worship Him whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world if anyone has an ear let him hear

he who leads into captivity shall go into captivity ity he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword here is the patience and the faith

of the of the saints that last verse is the key to the whole here is the patience and faith of the Saints we have been taught to look

for this image of Revelation 13 sometime in the future we were told actually back in the early 1980s that it had already come when Spain became the 10th m member

Revelation 13 this is not a revived Roman emperor empire this is the Roman Empire that had sent John to that miserable Rock in the aan called

Patmos this is the Rome that the world had created in its end against God that's how we should view the Roman Empire and it is by the grace of God but

also I believe by the propagation of the Gospel that little Stone cut with that hands that is crushing the world kingdoms that Rome has never been

repeated there has never been an Empire as vicious as systematic in its cruelty as mechanistic in its application of

legal rigor is Rome the British had an Empire upon which the Sun never set but frankly they didn't know what to do with it and at tea time nothing happened I mean you

read a history of the British Emperor it's like oh right it's an Empire lovely what do we do with it okay even the Soviet Union as we look back in the

history of it we realize that for most of its history it was morally and even financially bankrupt financially bankrupt that it lived on credit that it could not sustain and then shock of shocks to

all of us here in the west collapsed in collapsed in 1990 how about the American Empire represented by the golden

arches and the smile of Amazon our Empire is purely economic we we have never shown an interest in taking over territory except that which belonged to

the Native Americans once we got all of that we were pretty much sad we gave everything else back in fact after conquering Germany and Japan we rebuilt them this isn't Rome there has never

been a Rome and that is not largely because of the advancement of human reason and progress but I would submit to you because of the advancement of Jesus Christ in his kingdom even over

those who do not believe in Christ and have rejected the grace of God the benefits of that powerful gospel that Empire over throwing gospel that

overwhelmingly conquering gospel are still seen in the world today we live each one of us with freedoms that even a Roman citizen could not dream of we live

with with the rights the Liberties and the participation in our own government that even Paul could not even conceive of under the Roman Empire and so in into

this situation which again the epitome of human effort Paul seeks to

establish the basis of Faith and Hope in such a world as this on what does the believer stand in a world in

which that many of our brethren in the world today face for example in China communist China what on what does their faith stand what is the Assurance of her

hope you see here Paul has essentially finished with his presentation of his gospel there are still some explanatory work very important concerning Israel

chapters 9 10 and 11 he has established the Primacy of faith and the foundation of hope within the Christian's Life One author says

Faith but perfect love casts out fear and so what he does here is he offers us a series of rhetorical questions and I I need to explain to

What then shall we say to these things only this time indicating that he has finished with the somewhat dogmatic he's not about to introduce an objection to

things question one if God is for us who is against us well in one sense everyone that's kind of the point and he's going to make that clear a little bit down further he says tribulation distress

persecution famine nakedness Peril or sword these are the things wielded by man but that's not all that stands against us because further down he says

I am convinced neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor things present nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor any other created thing these are the things that

stand behind stand behind are the powers of this world that oppose Christianity so in one sense the answer to his question is everything opposes

us but in the real sense nothing opposes us because if God is for us if the

Creator and the omnipotent ruler if the author and finisher of our faith if the alpha and the Omega who straightens and none

can bend who bends and none can straighten if this God is for us then what are all these peons arrayed against us they are nothing this is the faith of

us that can prosper because God is for us and so the rhetorical question it's the natural answer is nothing he who did

itself a prophetic foreshadowing of what God himself would do remember Abraham's answer when Isaac asked father here is the wood here is the fire where is the

still sin and we have complete awareness of the weakness of the flesh how can we believe that there is therefore no condemnation Satan still exist in fact

the name of Satan is a verb it means to accuse and that is what he does and so who will bring a charge against God's elect then again in one sense

everyone have you been reminded though you profess Jesus Christ publicly and people know that you're a Believer have you been reminded of your

sins sometimes this is the uh most consistent attitude of unbelieving family members to remind you of your sin

to remind you of where you fall short our sin is ever with us it resides in our flesh and even it condemns us or seeks to condemn us

accuses us so how can we believe that there is therefore no condemnation because God has Justified if the judge of all the universe pronounces not

guilty is there any appeal are there any other Prosecuting attorneys that have something to add to the case unfortunately in our flesh we

constantly add more indictment against ourselves but none of them outweigh the blood of blood of Christ none of them outweigh the sacrifice of an innocent

lamb none of us outweigh the victory over the grave that signifies God's acceptance of that sacrifice and that blood none of them can wash away the

blood that has washed away our sin and so the answer to his question once again who will bring a charge against God's elect no one now this itself is a reference to
